Hi there!
My name is Marike. You may know me by some other appellations such as M’rika the Destroyer or Sekhmet. M’rika is the phonetic way of pronouncing my name, or at least pretty close. And the Destroyer? That’s a nickname that I got stuck with because I’m deeply, deeply clumsy. Seriously. I’ve broken a drinking glass in my mouth, run into walls at full tilt, caught my painting table on fire, and superglued a brush to my mouth, not to mention the myriad of day to day instances which make my life exciting. Sekhmet is my alias at Crocodile Games. For those of you not fluent in ancient Egyptian, Sekhm means destruction. Sekhmet’s also a badass lion headed goddess who occasionally goes on rampages, but that’s beside the point.
For some reason though, I don’t seem to destroy minis. Which is quite fortunate since painting minis pays my bills and some school as well. I’ve been painting minis since 2002, professionally since 2003. Most of my work has been for Crocodile Games, where I am currently the staff painter. I also do work for Freebooter Miniatures, Reaper Miniatures, and Darksword Miniatures. Recently I've come across a bit of spare time. This means that I can start accepting a couple of commissions and paint a mini for eBay each month.
In my spare time I’m fond of hiking, rollerblading, and bug hunting. I’m quite fond of bugs (a term I incorrectly use to describe all small arthropods), especially spiders. I’m also very found of the marvelous little cat that graces my Seattle home. You can see her pics in the galleries.
My spare time also goes to paining minis for competitions. I’ve won a couple of those gold colored demons that folks are so hung up on. Also I’ve won Best in Show at: Origins 2004 and 2005, Gencon 2005 and 2006, Salute 2006, and Kublacon 2006. I’ve done pretty well in lots of smaller competitions too.
I’ve written a couple of articles, mostly for Harbinger Magazine back in its paper days. There’s a Basti painting guide for sale at the croc, and a Tethru spearman unit one floating in the abyss somewhere. (Anybody know where?) For those of you that prefer free advice ;) there’s a copy of my Sebeki painting guide here and a quick overview of my small dioramas here. Also in the abyss is a blending and layering article I did for Undefeated magazine, but they passed into the goodnight a long time ago, so the odds of finding a copy are pretty slim.
There is no singular compilation of my work. I’ve selected my favorite pieces to put in my gallery here (linky). These are a pretty small fraction of what I’ve done for the last couple of years. If you get bored there’s always my coolminiornot gallery, where I’ve passed the 100 submissions mark. You can find a lot of my work by poking around Crocodile Games, Freebooter, Reaper and Darksword.
