Mauve Spots and Golden Sophies
  --24 May, 2008, 16:33:29

I have returned from Reapercon 2008 with another Golden Sophie. My version of their Dryad (one of three in the category)has tentacles and is instead the fabled dryopus.

I also came home with half a dozen chigger bites, which I acquired during my bug hunting forays. There are such wonderful bugs in Texas. My favorite was a spider that tricked me into thinking that it was a wasp. It had a red abdomen with some black spots. When I got too close it waggled it at me as if it had a stinger. Its two front legs it waggled very quickly like wasp antennae. But I caught on to the mimicry. You are not smarter than me Mr. Spider!

The chiggers of course did manage to outsmart me. Short of the infamous bot fly, they have the most irritating bite that I know of. The best remedy for this is a dot of fingernail polish. So I came home with half a dozen sparkly mauve spots. To add insult to irritation, one of the bastards bit my belly button.

And that's why I became a scientist...
  --14 May, 2008, 21:22:32

Today in a review session for the biochem test, my TA thought it would be fun to play a game. He made up a version of Biochem Review Jeopardy. If you got an answer correct, your team got points and the TA would toss a piece of candy. He was a really bad shot--candy hit the ceiling lights several times and bounced onto students. There were quite a few students who got in the habit of ducking. After the second or third crazy toss he told us that this was, "Why he became a scientist."

I got a lot of candy. Plenty to see me through my long flight down to Texas. See you all at Reapercon!
